What is a Waterproofing Design Specialist?

 A Property Care Association registered waterproofing design specialist (WDS) is an individual who specializes in waterproofing structures whether they be partly or wholly below ground.

The WDS will work in conjunction with the design team (if applicable) to produce a waterproofing specification that is designed specifically for the structure.

In order to be accepted onto the PCA Waterproofing Design Specialists register the individual must:-.

  • Demonstrate competence in all aspects of structural waterproofing
  • Be a member or be employed by a member of the Property Care Association
  • Hold the Certificate Surveyor in Structural Waterproofing (CSSW) qualification
  • Have an on-going commitment to skills development and participate in the PCA's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme
  • Hold Professional Indemnity Insurance
  • Have a good understanding of the different waterproofing systems available
  • A solid understanding of the requirements of BS 8102
  • Sufficient structural knowledge to be able to communicate with a structural engineer
  • Sufficient geotechnical knowledge to be able understand the implications of a soil report

As with all companies and individuals that retain membership with the PCA, those featured on the Register must observe the Association's Code of Ethics and all the relevant Standards that relate to the conduct and behaviour of members.

Note: The specialist can also be a manufacturer or supplier as long as they can demonstrate relevant experience.

What is BS8102:2009 and why is this relevant?

 BS 8102:2009 is the Code of Practice for protection of below ground structures against water from the ground.

This is particularly relevant because it recommends that a specialist in waterproofing is included in the design team for any structure where usable space is fully or partly below the ground level.

This is set out in section 4.2 of BS 8102:2009 under the heading .Design Team.. The code states:

A waterproofing specialist should be included as part of the design team so that an integrated waterproofing solution is created The waterproofing specialist should:
a) be suitably experienced;
b) be capable of devising solutions that accommodate the various project constraints and needs;
c) provide the design team with information and guidance that assists with and influences the design, installation and future maintenance of the waterproofed structure..
